I know a lot of our kids aren't old enough yet, but has anyone put their kids in preschool? And if you hadn't, do you wish you had?

The only reason I am asking is because our state is starting a new voluntary pre-kindergarten program for 4 yr olds. This is free preschool, for 3 hrs a day, 5 days a week.
I am thinking of signing up Chandler. I don't think he will have any trouble being ready academically to start Kindergarten. I am just worried he will have trouble separating from me, and that's why I'm thinking of signing him up.
On the other hand, he is my "baby" and I am not sure I am ready to send him off to school already. He swears he is ready to go, but I am reluctant to let go!
Jordyn went to preschool. It was only for 3 days a week, though, for just a few months. Cody didn't go. He had trouble separating from me to go to Kindergarten, though. Chandler is much worse. At story time at the library, he still won't get off of my lap to sit on the floor with the other kids , and we've been going for a couple of years now!

Yes, I wish I had sent ALL of my children to pre-school.
And as a former Pre-school teacher, I think it will be beneficial for both you and your child. There is more to being 'ready for school' than academic prepardness.

We've sent all of our kids to preschool so far and have been pleased. The kids enjoy it ... Karen can comment more here.

I sent Ashlyn to a preschool. She didn't learn anything new, but the interaction she got with the other kids and her learning to follow the teacher were worth it. And it was nice to have some alone time with Ella.

How old were your kids when you sent them?

Ashlyn was 5. I mainly sent her because she missed the cut off for kindergarten by a couple of weeks.

I have taught preschool, as well as having my college degree focus heavily on early childhood education. I am sure I could provide Chandler with most of what he would get in a preschool. He gets interaction with other children and teachers at church, story time, swimming lessons, etc. Mom, why do you wish you had sent all of your kids to pre-k? Just curious.

Yes, all that you say is true. But in those situations he knows that you are always nearby or he can see you and can get to you whenever he wants you. You will also be making that bond between mother/child even tighter, making it even harder on your child to separate from you when there is no longer a choice.
Why do I wish I had sent all my children to pre-K? The ones that went seemed to have had a better start and were farther ahead when they started Kindergarten than the ones who didn't go. They were more comfortable with a school schedule and following someone else's rules. And we had/have full day kindergarten, so they were better able to cope with a full day away from mom and adjusted quicker to school.

Austen went for 1.5 years before kindergarten
Carter went 1 year before kindergarten (it was actually kindergarten cirriculum (sp?))
Chloe starts soon, going 2 days a week.
We don't know why we do it, just to get them a good intro to school structure. It also gives Karen some time off (scheduled baby sitter :) )

Okay if you are making him swear that he is ready to go than YOU really need to LET him go. I ditto all that Carrie and wow said. If he is that clingy to you and you have all day Kindergarten YOU and HE really need this time to get a taste of school.I have a friend whose son is very similar and we have Kindersteps here that is similar free 5 days 2 1/2 hrs.
and it was treated as his preschool she is glad he had that in prep for Kindergarten.

Okay, okay, okay. I signed him up.
Honestly, we knew that pre-k would be good for him (& us), and were always planning on sending him, but we chickened out when it came time to signing him up. (When you get to sending your very last child away to school, maybe you'll understand how we feel.)
But, we got him into a great preschool, with a great teacher who used to be a highly recommended kindergarten teacher in the public schools (until she bought the preschool).

BTW, Chandler is so excited to go, he can hardly stand it. Every day he asks me, "Can I go to school today?!"
Of course, when we went to look at the school, Chandler told me he didn't like it because there were too many kids.
The first day should be interesting....

Good for you! At this point I am happy having 2 kids at school all day. We have 1/2 day Kindergarten unless you want to pay about $250.00 a month.
I'll try imagining all in school.
