Have a great day!

Wednesday, October 26, 2005

We are going to make this Saturday our "Pumpkin Day", based on the book with the same title by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace.

In the book the family has pumpkin pancakes for breakfast, picks out and carves a pumpkin, eats pumpkin pie, roasts pumpkin seeds, and makes pumpkin muffins.

Any other suggestions for possible Pumpkin Day activities?

I have recipes for a really yummy pumpkin dessert, as well as a new recipe for Chocolate Pumpkin brownies that I could try out.

I have the words to several Great Pumpkin songs from the Peanuts gang.

Any games or crafts?

You could do a Chain Gang Pumpkin Story. The example is actually one called Chain Gang Ghost Story, but you could modify it to fit a pumpkin theme.

Example: In a room lit only by jack-o'-lanterns, the Ghost Host gathers storytellers in a circle and starts spinning a spooky yarn by whispering into a handheld tape recorder: "One night, Mr. Bonaparte heard the sound of heavy footsteps in his attic. With every step, the house rocked and rattled..." The host then passes the tape recorder to a child who improvises what happens next: "The man couldn't take the noise anymore, so he went upstairs with a baseball bat and saw..."

2. Once each child has had a chance to speak, the Ghost Host rewinds the tape, extinguishes the jack-o'-lanterns and the gang listens to the story in the dark.

TIPS:
Older kids enjoy the added challenge of pulling an object, such as a feather, dog collar, hand mirror, and whatever else we could round up, out of a box and incorporating the item into the story.

I got that idea from family fun. You could probably get other ideas there, too.

Make pumpkin "lanterns" or torn construction paper mosaic pumpkins, 'who can draw the scariest jack-o-lantern face,' or play 'pin the face on the pumpkin.'
